Supporting Mental Health During Back to School

Updated: Aug 14

The back-to-school season is an exciting yet stressful time for both parents and children.

While new school supplies and reconnecting with friends bring joy, the transition can also be overwhelming. Mental health is a crucial aspect of this transition.

1. Understanding Back-to-School Anxiety

   - Recognize Common Fears: Some common anxieties children may face are a fear of new environments, meeting new teachers, or handling academic pressure.

   - Age-Specific Concerns: Different age groups may experience back-to-school anxiety differently, from kindergarten to high school.

3. Open Communication

   - Creating a Safe Space: Create an environment where their children feel comfortable sharing their concerns.

   - Active Listening: The importance of listening without judgment will keep them communicating and acknowledging their feelings.

4. Managing Screen Time

   - Balancing Screen Use: It is important to set limits on screen time to reduce stress and improve focus.

   - Screen Time Strategies: Strategies like tech-free zones or times are important during the first and last hours of the day.

5. Encouraging Social Connections

6. Recognizing Signs of Distress

   - Identifying Red Flags: Signs that may indicate a child is struggling with more than just typical back-to-school jitters are changes in appetite, sleep disturbances and withdrawal from activities.

   - Seeking Professional Help: If your child or teen is having trouble adjusting to the new school year and you have seen changes in mood, social or behavioral things that are concerning you, please seek help.

7. Self-Care for Parents

   - Parents’ Role: Parents’ mental health and stress levels can impact their children so please take of yourself during back to school.

   - Self-Care Tips: Set aside time for relaxation, stay connected with their own support networks, and practice mindfulness.
